These measures raise serious concerns for freedom of expression, freedom of association, and the implied freedom of political communication that underpins Australia’s democratic system.

Australia already has robust laws to address violence, threats, harassment and incitement. Expanding state power over speech and association in this way risks setting a precedent that will extend well beyond the stated purpose of the legislation.
