To the European Council and the German Federal Government,

  • We call on you to immediately revoke all sanctions imposed on Berlin-based journalist Hüseyin Doğru.

  • Mr Doğru has not been charged with a criminal offence. He has not stood trial. He has not been convicted. Yet his bank accounts have been frozen, EU persons are prohibited from employing him or paying him, and his family, including three young children, has been left in financial distress. His wife's accounts have also been frozen despite her not being named on the sanctions list.

  • These are measures designed for foreign state actors. They are being used against a journalist exercising his right to report. Former European Court of Justice Judge Prof. Dr. Ninon Colneric has concluded that the sanctions against Mr Doğru violate EU law.

  • We call on you to:
  • 1. Revoke all sanctions against Hüseyin Doğru.
  • 2. Restore full civil and economic rights to Doğru and his family.
  • 3. Review Council Decision (CFSP) 2024/2643 and its application to journalists and residents of the EU.

  • Sincerely,

  • The Information Rights Project

Free Hüseyin Doğru. End the EU Sanctions on Journalism.

A German journalist can't feed his family.

Hüseyin Doğru founded an independent media outlet. He covered protests. He published opinions. Then the European Union placed him under sanctions designed for foreign adversaries.

No charges. No trial. No conviction. Just punishment.

His bank accounts are frozen. He is banned from working. It is a criminal offence for anyone to employ him or give him money. His wife's accounts have also been seized. His three young children are living inside a crisis the EU created.

The European Union passed the European Media Freedom Act to protect journalists. Then it sanctioned one of its own.

If they can destroy Doğru's life without ever charging him with a crime, no journalist in Europe is safe.

Former European Court of Justice Judge Prof. Dr. Ninon Colneric has concluded that these sanctions violate EU law. The EU has ignored her. Doğru's accounts are still frozen. His family is still suffering.

Sign the open letter. Demand the European Council revoke the sanctions, restore Doğru's rights, and end the use of sanctions as a weapon against the press.
