The Information Rights Project

Privacy Policy

The Information Rights Project (TIRP) is committed to protecting your privacy.

Collection, retention, use and protection of your data

We collect information when you visit our website or contact us via email. We strive to require only the bare minimum of information necessary for the particular function or activity we are carrying out.

If you contact us via email, we retain the information you provide to handle related requests and complaints, communicate responses, provide updates regarding our policies and services, to accept donations, and to assess suitable candidates for career opportunities within TIRP. This includes your name, email address, street address, state, suburb, postcode, and phone number.

We collect information regarding visits to our website. We use the open source analytics platform Matamo to track visitor usage. With Matamo, we log IP addresses, browser, operating system, visiting time, session, actions per visit, page views per visit, returning visitors, and referring site information. The data we collect through Matamo is stored on our own servers, and will never be shared with others. If your web browser has Do Not Track enabled, Matamo will not track your visit.

We are committed to safeguarding personal information in our possession from unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure, as well as from misuse, interference, and loss. We take reasonable measures to protect it. When personal information is no longer necessary, we will either securely destroy or de-identify it.

We do not sell our email list. We do not share or distribute your contact information unless specifically stated so, and never without your explicit consent.

Anonymity
Where possible, we will allow you to interact with us anonymously or using a pseudonym. For example, if you contact us via email with a general question, we will not ask for your name unless we need it to adequately handle your question.

However, for most of our functions and activities we usually need your name and contact information and enough information about the particular matter to enable us to fairly and efficiently handle your inquiry, request, complaint or application, or to act on your information.

Control of your data

You retain the right to view and request copies, deletion, and modification of the personal data we collect from you. You may contact us at any time and request access to the information that we hold on you, as well as subsequent amendments and/or deletion of the data we hold on you. We will ask you to verify your identity before we give you access to your information or correct it, and we will try to make the process as simple as possible. Please contact informationrightsproject@protonmail.com if you have any inquiries relating to your data.

If you no longer wish to receive updates from us via email, please contact informationrightsproject@protonmail.com.

Partners and third parties

To conduct our business or operate our website, we occasionally use third-party tools or services, which may involve sharing information with their operators for that purpose. Some of these providers may operate or be situated outside of Australia, but we endeavour to use locally-based providers wherever possible.

Compliance with law enforcement

We will inform you beforehand, if legally permissible (unless prevented or unfeasible), if we are obligated by law to reveal any information you have supplied, giving you the chance to object to the disclosure. Your failure to challenge the disclosure request may result in us being required by law to turn over your information. We will publicly announce all legal requests we get to disclose the personal information of our members, supporters, and donors, unless we are specifically prohibited from doing so.

Security of our systems
