Stop Internet Censorship Submission

The government is writing itself a censorship power. You have until Tuesday 22 September to say no.

You signed the petition. This goes further. A submission lands on the desk of the people drafting the law, in writing before it reaches Parliament in October.

Section 25C(2) lets the Communications Minister determine additional material she is "satisfied may cause serious harm." Section 25C(1)(m) makes that a catch-all for anything.

One minister. One opinion. The material does not have to be illegal. Parliament does not have to agree first.

Asked who decides what counts as a new serious harm, the Minister said the test would ultimately be made by her.

She will not take your post down. Platforms will, facing fines of up to $109.2 million if a regulator later says they did not do enough. Every platform removes more than the law requires. Your post disappears. You cannot complain to the platform. You cannot complain to the Minister who defined the category.

Censorship with nobody's name on it.

There is not one express protection in this Bill for journalism, protest, satire or political debate. This should concern everyone who cares about press freedom.

Australians should decide what they see online. Not the government.
