The University of Melbourne has crossed a line.
By secretly tracking students’ movements with Wi-Fi data, CCTV, and student IDs during peaceful pro-Palestine protests, the University has not just broken its promise of trust, the Victorian Privacy and Data Protection Deputy Commissioner found this surveillance breached privacy law.
Universities are meant to be spaces of bold debate, protest, and open community. Places where student’s speech and dissent are defended, not monitored or punished.
The University’s decision to watch, identify, and move to discipline peaceful protesters is an attack on freedom of expression and assembly. This is repression, not protection.
This surveillance cannot go unchallenged.
